Collaboration, this is the defining term of my workshop, the action of working with someone to produce or create something. Workshops have always held their own distinctive culture and character, and through the process of making, that culture is expressed through the built form. I believe strongly in the idea of Collaboration not only as a method of working but as a way to build communities. Shared work spaces evolve into communities through the act of making, networking and collaborating. In a time where affordable artist housing is decreasing, the need for places for which artists and designers can work freely is an on-going issue. My design aims to bring attention to the idea of collaboration while on display. The building itself features a grid of columns and beams that allow for a longer span spaces for which to inhabit. These spaces offer 360 degree views in and out of the building, while the building is divided into three bands that focus on the different actions; workshops, circulation, and collaboration. By acting as a container for collaboration, my building aims to not only produce objects, but to act as an object itself.
